Does anyone out there have any advice on a JD 790 w/FEL on anything maintenance wise besides what the book says needs to be done ? Also has anyone ran into any problems yet with axle bearings going bad ? In my area most guys with these tractors are using them hard with any known troubles, so far haven't heard any bad news on them. Am curious though why JD will not sell an extended warranty on the 790 and it does on other models .

I have a 790 with 419 FEL. Had them for almost 2 years. I've used the FEL for digging and scooping dirt and hauling rocks with no problems. The first thing I did with it was to scoop out an access road down a 3' embankment into a creek on our property (so I could get rocks for landscaping). Also used it to pull old fence posts (wrap a strap around the post and the bucket and just lift the post straight out of the ground). Only thing I do is grease the fittings as specified. I do have the bucket level indicator rod which is real nice so you know when the bucket is level with the ground. Only problem I've had with the 790 is the battery leaking acid all over the place (it had the battery with 6 screw on caps). I finally went to Walmart and got a no-maintenance sealed battery to stop that problem (after cleaning and repainting the battery box area twice). This is a problem that other owners have also mentioned. ....

"Am curious though why JD will not sell an extended warranty on the 790 and it does on other models "

$1156 for a 3year-3600 hour extension over and above your 2year-2000hour standard warranty according to the JD website. I remember being asked about a warranty but I declined. Who said you couldn't get it????

Anyway I love my 790 and I use the FEl often, only a little over 100 hours so far but used hard without any sign of problems. No indications that I can't expect the same for many years and hours to come. ....

I see what yuo are saying regarding the PowerGard warranty. however onlinr the let me configure SOME tye of extended warranty, choose a deductible and a term for a 790, that is where I got the price. I don't know if thta is another plan because it appears Powergard is a fixed $250 deductible plan. That area of the site is temporarily down soI can't check now.

I also seem to recall my dealer offering me something, but I say NO to those things so fast maybe I am wrong. From everything I have read extended warranties(with rare exceptions) are a BAD deal for the consumer. It's like Vegas ot Atlantic City, they take your $$ because the odds of them paying out more than you paid are slight. If they weren't ther would be no extended warranties. ....

For the 790 the only part that I am concerned about are the fuel injectors assy. I have a buddy with a JD 4510 4WD and he bought the 3 year ext warranty for that reason as his dad is a serious lawnscaper for his part time job with a NH tractor about 55 hp, can spread a dump truck load of dirt in 8 minutes with box blade, has had fuel injector problems and on his past tractos he trades every few years with about 3000 hours has had trouble and one set of injectors cost more than the warranty. And after some more investigating that seems to be the one PRICEY breakdown on tractos that happens pretty regularly, like transmission in chevy trucks with more than 70k miles. So just investigating to see if warranty avail and weigh the pros and cons.

Has anyone had or heard of any other pricey breakdowns on the JD 790 that could influence buying a warranty if avail ? ....
